52 colours · 4 manufacturers
See the shingle on a roof, against your brick.
The question is never really what a colour looks like — it is whether it works with the house you already own. Set both and find out.
Pick the closest. You are judging whether the pair works, not matching a paint chip.
The colours
Architectural shingle, by manufacturer
Tap any colour to put it on the roof above. These are the four lines most commonly installed across the northeast metroplex.
GAF Timberline HDZ
10 coloursThe most widely installed architectural shingle in North Texas. If a DFW contractor quotes you one shingle without asking, it is usually this.
Owens Corning Duration
13 coloursSureNail reinforced nailing strip. The widest colour range of the four, and strong on greys.
IKO Cambridge
10 coloursOften the value option of the four, with a tighter colour range. The high-wind application upgrade is worth asking about here.
Atlas Pinnacle Pristine
19 colours3M Scotchgard copper granules against algae streaking — the most aggressive algae protection of the four, which matters on shaded north slopes.
These swatches are approximations. Screens differ, shingle blends change between production runs, and Texas sun reads colour warmer and lighter than a monitor does. Use this to get to a shortlist of two or three — then look at physical samples outdoors, against your own brick, at the time of day you see the house most. Your contractor brings them free.
Side by side
How the four lines compare
All four are laminated architectural shingle with lifetime limited warranties. The differences that actually matter in a hail market are wind rating, impact class and algae protection.
| Line | Warranty | Wind | Impact | Algae |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| GAF Timberline HDZ | Limited Lifetime | Wind rating with qualifying installation | Class 3 (Class 4 on the ArmorShield line) | StainGuard Plus algae warranty |
| Owens Corning Duration | Limited Lifetime | 130 mph limited wind warranty | Class 3 (Class 4 on Duration STORM) | StreakGuard algae resistance |
| IKO Cambridge | Limited Lifetime | 110 mph, upgradeable to 130 mph with high-wind application | — | 10-year blue-green algae warranty |
| Atlas Pinnacle Pristine | Atlas Lifetime Limited | 130 mph wind damage warranty | Class 3 | 3M Scotchgard Protector |
Figures from each manufacturer's own product pages, August 2026. Warranty terms are conditional on qualifying installation — the wind rating in particular usually depends on specific nailing and starter requirements being followed. Confirm current terms with your contractor before ordering.
How to actually choose
Start with the brick, not the shingle. Your brick is not changing and it is the larger surface. Red brick sits well with weathered browns, charcoals and true greys, and fights orange-leaning tans. Blond and buff brick take almost anything but look washed out under very light shingle. Grey brick wants either a deliberate match or a clear contrast — halfway reads as a mistake.
Check the HOA before you fall in love. Many DFW subdivisions restrict profile and colour range, and Allen and Frisco neighbourhoods tend to be strictest. It is a five-minute check that occasionally saves a whole re-do.
Look at your street. Not to match it — to avoid being the one house that clashes. If every roof on the block is weathered brown and you go bright grey, that is a decision worth making on purpose rather than by accident.
Ignore the heat argument, mostly. A lighter shingle does run cooler, but the difference is small next to whether your attic is ventilated properly. Do not pick a colour you dislike over a couple of degrees you will never notice — spend that attention on the ventilation instead, which is covered in our guide to how long a roof lasts here.
Resale. If you might sell within five years, stay near the middle — weathered browns, charcoals, mid greys. Green, blue and red roofs are strong preferences and buyers either love them or price them.
Getting real samples
Every contractor in the network brings physical sample boards to the free inspection, at no cost and with no obligation. Ask for the two or three you shortlisted here.
- Hold them against the brick, outdoors
- Look in the morning and again at dusk
- Stand back at the kerb — roofs are seen from distance
- Ask which the supplier actually has in stock
Questions
About shingle colour
What colour roof is best in Texas heat?
Lighter colours reflect a little more heat, but the effect is small next to attic ventilation and installation quality. Choose the colour you actually want and spend the attention on making sure intake and exhaust ventilation are right — that is what decides whether the roof cooks from underneath.
Do these colours look the same in real life?
No. Every swatch here is an approximation, screens vary, and shingle blends change between production runs. Texas sun also reads colours warmer and lighter than a monitor does. Use this to narrow to two or three, then look at physical samples in daylight against your own brick.
What colour do most North Texas homes have?
Weathered Wood and its equivalents across the brands, followed by the charcoals and greys. It is the default because it sits comfortably against both the red and the blond brick that dominate DFW subdivisions.
Will my HOA let me choose any colour?
Often not. Many DFW subdivisions restrict shingle profile and colour range, and Allen and Frisco neighbourhoods tend to be the strictest. Check before materials are ordered — a replacement that ignores the guidelines can draw a letter after the fact.
Does a darker roof make the house hotter?
Marginally. The measurable difference in attic temperature between a dark and a light shingle is real but modest, and it is dwarfed by whether the attic is ventilated and insulated properly. Do not choose a colour you dislike over this.
Which brand should I pick?
For most homes the brand matters less than the installation. All four lines here are laminated architectural shingle with lifetime limited warranties; the differences are in wind rating, algae protection and colour range. A well-installed mid-tier shingle outlasts a premium one fitted badly.
What is an impact-resistant shingle?
A Class 4 shingle is built to survive a standardised steel-ball impact test without cracking. In a hail market that matters, and many Texas carriers offer a premium discount for one. Ask your agent what the discount would actually be before deciding it is not worth the upgrade.
