The physical difference
Three-tab is a single flat layer of asphalt-saturated mat with two slots cut in it, producing three visible tabs. It is thin, light, cheap and uniform, and it lies flat.
Architectural — also called laminated or dimensional — bonds two or more layers together, so the shingle is thicker, heavier and has depth and shadow. That extra mass is doing real work: it absorbs impact energy that a single layer transmits straight through.
Impact-resistant (Class 4) is architectural shingle built to survive a standardised steel-ball impact test without cracking, usually via a modified asphalt formulation or a reinforcing backing. It is the top asphalt tier.

Why this matters more in North Texas than almost anywhere
In most of the country shingle choice is a question about looks and lifespan. Here it is a question about hail, because hail is what usually ends the roof.
A single flat layer has one chance to absorb an impact. A laminated shingle has mass and a second layer behind the strike, so the same stone that cracks weathered three-tab may only bruise architectural. That is the difference between a roof that needs replacing after a storm and one that carries on.
It is also why so many older Garland homes — the part of the metroplex where three-tab is still common — see outright shingle failure in storms that leave newer neighbourhoods with bruising alone.
The Class 4 discount is worth asking about
Many Texas carriers offer a premium discount for a verified impact-resistant roof, because it lowers their exposure in exactly the event that drives claims here. The discount varies by carrier and is not automatic — you generally have to provide the manufacturer certificate after installation.
Before dismissing Class 4 as too expensive, ask your agent what the annual discount would actually be and divide the upgrade cost by it. Over the life of the roof the answer sometimes flips the decision, and it improves your odds of coming through the next storm without a claim at all.
When three-tab still makes sense
Rarely, but not never. It can be the right call on a detached garage or an outbuilding, on a property you are about to sell where the roof only needs to be sound and code-compliant, or where an HOA or a historic guideline specifically calls for a flat profile.
On the house you intend to live in, in this market, the saving is usually erased by the first serious storm.

Not sure where your own roof stands?
A licensed North Texas roofer will inspect it, photograph anything they find and give you a written estimate — at no cost, whether you hire anyone or not.
Common questions
Are architectural shingles worth the extra cost?
In North Texas, generally yes. The laminated construction absorbs hail impact that a single-layer three-tab transmits straight through, and the practical life is several years longer. Hail is what usually ends a roof here.
What is a Class 4 impact-resistant shingle?
An architectural shingle built to survive a standardised steel-ball impact test without cracking. It is the top asphalt tier and many Texas carriers offer a premium discount for having one.
Will impact-resistant shingles lower my insurance?
Often, though the discount varies by carrier and is not automatic — you generally have to submit the manufacturer certificate after installation. Ask your agent for the actual figure before deciding.
Can I put architectural shingle over three-tab?
Layering over an existing roof is a poor idea regardless of the materials. It hides the decking so damage cannot be assessed, adds weight the framing was not designed for, and shortens the life of the new shingle.
